why sleeping is the best // life tips

There are so many tips floating around, whether it be in books, on the internet, from your friends / family ( WHAT UP MOM, so many tips, swear she knows everything ) but there is nothing that is more common among all of these tips than sleep.

Sleep is the number one tip for leading a healthy lifestyle, living a happy life, radiating beauty and youthfulness, staying fit and having enough motivation / drive to reach your goals.

I am a firm believer in almost all of the beauty tips and anti-aging tips that I’ve come across and I do believe that a lot of them can help your looks as well as how you feel. But there is no tip that I believe in more than getting a good night’s rest. There is nothing that motivates me more to workout than having a nice sleep the night before. Nothing makes me have a happier day ( other than maybe being surprised with chocolate ) than having a full night’s sleep.

Sleep will not only help you look better BUT it will help you feel better. My eyes look so dead and lifeless when I don’t get enough sleep, my face is pale ( more so than my normal paleness ) and I don’t have enough energy to keep my smile on my face. I can’t focus as hard, my attention jumps from one thing to the other AND I just spend my day wishing I hadn’t stayed up late the night before binge-watching a tv show that GUESS WHAT will still be there in days to come.

I seriously believe in sleeping as much as you can ( as long as it isn’t keeping you from doing things that you need to do ). I do not get how some people can get 6 hours of sleep a night ( or less – eeekkk! ) and function well. Like how do you people do it?! ( kidding I don’t want to know. I like my sleep ).

Plus you look soooooo much better when you sleep well. Who wants to look like a zombie ( I don’t see anybody’s hands raised ). Its definitely not cute and SO SO not good for your body. Listen to your body and give it what it needs! If you’re thirsty, you’ll drink something. If you’re hungry, you’ll get food. If you’re tired? SLEEP! Don’t feed your body things to keep it awake, allow it the rest it deserves. You put it through a lot each day, so listen to it!

I like a MINIMUM of 8 hours of sleep a night.

I prefer 9 or 10… if I could sleep for 11 or 12 hours each night I would, but I save those for the times when I REALLY need it – like the weekend or some days off, I’ll treat myself.

If I don’t get at least 8 hours of sleep a night I am miserable. I mean MISERABLE. I am cranky, unhappy, so moody, and unproductive, my attention span is shot, I feel like shit and I eat like, so unhealthy. I need my sleep to motivate me and keep me on track in all aspects of my life.


Over the last 22 years of my life, I’ve definitely done my fair share of sleeping ( ha ) and I’ve picked up some tips + tricks along the way to help you sleep better and allow your body to have the rest it deserves:

Melatonin: Melatonin was introduced to me by my bf so many years ago and I have gone through cycles of loving and hating it. My love/hate relationship with melatonin is basically just because I hate taking pills ( because I feel like I don’t need them and I can live without them). BUT pills can seriously impact your life, think about vitamins! Those things can work wonders if you are deficient in something or if your body needs a little boost. So I think of my melatonin pills as sleep boosters. These pills work wonders and have so many positive benefits. Some include: a better sleep ( DUH ), reduces the time it takes you to fall asleep, reduces the number of sleep interruptions AKA the amount of times you wake up during the night and helps to regulate your sleep cycle. Tea: I love love love tea. I would drink just tea for the rest of my life if that was acceptable. I am literally sitting here drinking some black peppermint tea as I write this ( my favourite tea for making your stomach feel better/digestion! ). Different types of tea are just so tasty and help your body in SO many ways. But some my favourite types of tea are ones that help you relax at night and sleep. I love chamomile with a drop ( or two! ) of pure honey, decaf lemongrass, and decaf dandelion root tea. If you add a drop of honey to any of these, they are even more delicious ( they’re delicious either way, but who doesn’t love honey! ). I love drinking a nice, warm cup of tea before bed while reading a good book because it a ) relaxes you, and b ) sets the mood for bed… so warm and cozy.

Read A Book: Reading a book is one of my favourite ways to unwind and prepare myself for sleeping. Not only is it important to read book. I know I slack on this a lot because I’m so preoccupied with social media, reading blogs, watching TV/YouTube. But there’s something so satisfying about finishing a book, like a real paper book. Sometimes I’ll read a book on my iPad but for the most part I prefer an actual paper book. Esp at night because then you don’t get the light waking you up.

Unplug: The lights from your phones, laptops/computers, iPads/tablets, whatever, are sooo hard on your eyes. I try to unplug at least 30 miutes before I fall asleep. Some nights I’ll read for 30 or so minutes ( sometimes more if I’m not that tired, other times I barely make it through 3 pages and I am ready to sleep! ), other nights I just make sure I turn off all of my electronics and just lay there in the dark – sometimes I meditate!! or journal and then fall asleep.

Invest in quality sleep products: Your mattress and pillows are SO important. I’m super picky about my mattresses. I hate when they are too hard, or too soft ( what up Goldilocks ) so it took me a while to accept the fact that my old mattress was old and really bad for my back and that I needed a new one. Finally found one ( 2 mattresses later OOPS! ) and I love it. I have been having the best sleeps ever lately. I also have memory foam pillows that have a cooling sensation – love this. I like to layer on the blankets at night so keeping my face / head cool creates an interesting contrast and I love it. What you sleep on totally impacts your sleep quality, so invest invest invest!

Meditate: I love meditating before bed. I lay really still in my bed and completely focus on me. My phone’s on silent ( only music playing ), the lights are off or dimmed and nobody interrupts me because I do it RIGHT before I go to sleep. I love Meditation 101 playlist on Apple Music for my music playing in the background. I love to just use this time to focus on relaxing every part of my body and connecting with it. This sounds super weird but my mom taught me this trick FOREVER ago and you just work on relaxing each and every part of your body. You just squeeze each part and think about it and it does something to you and it’s so relaxing. Sounds weird, but just try it.

Treat yourself before you sleep: I love to treat myself to a bath complete with Lush bath bombs and B&BW bubble bath. I also like to make sure that I take off all of my makeup, exfoliate and even do a face mask before bed. If I don’t have time to do all of this, I like to have a hot shower ( I CANNOT go to bed without showering, even if I go out to a club / party, I’ll have a shower at 4 am before crawling in bed ). Hot showers relax me and I cannot sleep without one. You need to find what works for you, treat yourself and allow yourself to have a good night’s sleep.

Sleep is my go-to beauty tip, health tip, fitness tip, happiness tip, overall life tip because without it, we’d all be a wreck. I think it is important to listen to your body.

Don’t let sleeping ruin your fun. Don’t let sleeping consume you.

But listen to your body.

Staying rested is key in living a healthy, happy, joyous life. Nothing keeps you looking and feeling younger than being well rested.
